The Metropolitan Opera House was opened on Novoember 17, 1908. It was built the Oscar Hammerstein Sr. It was designed by the architects William H. McElfatrick and John B. McElfatrick. In the 1920's it was adapted to movie theatre. Later the building was converted to a church and that is its current function today.
For a period the building was unused and crumbling, but it has since been restored. It can be seen in its abandoned state in the movie 12 Monkeys.
