The old St. Nicks Coal Breaker was built by Reading Anthracite in 1930 and began operating in 1932. It was the largest coal breaker in the world. It was used by Reading Anthracite for 31 years until it was replace with a new St. Nicholas breaker.

This is one of the few intact silk mills left in this area. Most have been demolished or turned into offices or apartments. The complex is huge and I hope to get inside much more of it than I did on this trip. Rumors that it will become condos are already circulating...

Located in Phillipsburg, Nj and dating back to the 1870's, this company was a producer of water tanks and stand pipes. From a woman in an active business across the road I learned the building was abandoned at least 18 years.

The stationn was designed by the Warren & Wetmore and Reed and Stem firms who also designed New York City's Grand Central Terminal, and was done in the the Beaux-Arts Classical style. It opened in 1913, and was last used by Amtrack in 1988. The only building of any real height in that part of the city, the depot towers about the neighborhood around it like a monument to the former glory of Detroit.

In April 2009, Detroit still passed a resolution to demolish the structure, despite it being listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Built in 1926, the Beury Building is an amazing example of Late Gothic Revival and Art Deco architecture. The building, designed by architect William L. Lee, was originally the National Bank of North Philadelphia. Covered with graffiti and little more than a garbage strewn shell on the inside, there is little to hint at the buildings noble history. Only the several vaults still found in the lower level hint that this was once a center of major commerce. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places on 5/20/1985 and the Philadelphia Register of Historic Places on 11/27/1985.

The Divine Lorraine was designed by architect Willis G. Hale and built between 1892 and 1894. Originally created as luxury aparments for Philadelphia's wealthy, it was purchased in 1900 by the Metropolitan Hotel Company and renamed the Lorraine Hotel. In 1948, the building was sold to Father Divine, leader of a religious group called the Universal Peace Mission Movement. Father Divine renamed the hotel the Divine Lorraine, and it became the first hotel of its class in Philly to be fully integrated. It closed in 1999. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002.

The expansion of the railroads in the late 1800s provided new access to the remote Pocono Mountains. Originally built in 1901 as a 20 room inn, the inn was expanded in 1923 to a majestic 4 story hotel. Other great inns soon followed, but Buck Hill remained one of the largest of the Pocono inns ever built. With changes in tourism, the inn was forced to close down in 1991. Today, the empty inn looms over the surrounding community, a relic to another time.

Usually when I photograph a site, I do some research to learn about its history. This place turned out to be one of the worst pits of crime, suffering and sorrow I ever encountered. I found numerous reviews describing the place as filthy with a rude staff and a parkinglot filled with prostitutes. A scan of local paper headlines revealed a scene of numerous violent crimes, drug busts, and sexual assualts. Eventually, it was closed down because of a chronic roach problem.

The abandoned building of Pennhurst Mental Hospital. A site of great suffering and misery that led to changes in the laws governing mental health care.

Opened in 1909, Letchworth was designed to feel more like a community than a hospital. It was another progressive attempt to provide a positive environment for the mentally ill.

The Presser home was created by Theodore Presser, a highly successful music publisher. Originally, the home was opened on 3rd Street in Philadelphia as the Home for Aged Musicians, but met with little success. The home was renamed to the Home for Retired Music Teachers and in 1914 it was moved to Germantown.

Designed by J. Franklin Stuckert and built by John W. Gilton in 1895, the Nugent home was a retirement home for aging Baptist ministers. The structure is an incredible example of French Renaissance style architecture and is on the National Register of Historic Places.

The old Baptist Temple at Temple University. I've wanted to get in here since I was an undergrad back in the 1980's. Two univeristy presidents tried to get it torn down, but thankfully the current administration sees the value in history. So it's being renovated. My one regret is I did not get to see it before the work was started.

Lynnewood Hall is a 110-room Georgian-style mansion in Elkins Park, just outside Philadelphia. It was designed by Horace Trumbauer for industrialist Peter A. B. Widener between 1897 and 1900, and is considered the largest surviving Gilded Age mansion in the area. It once housed one of the most important Gilded Age private art collections of European master pieces. In addition to the large art gallery, the estate also included a ballroom, swimming pool, wine cellars, a farm and an electrical power plant.

In 1952, the Faith Theological Seminary purchased the property for $192,000. Under their ownership the mansion suffered general decline and neglect. During this time, many of the features of the hall were sold off. Today the property is owned by the First Korean Church of New York, however they have not made any restorations on the property.
